Free Up Space by Using Self Storage During Your Home Renovations

5 November 2024

A recent statistic suggests that a third of UK homeowners plan to renovate their home in some way this year. Types of home renovations can range from simply decorating a room to more complex renovation projects such as bathroom or kitchen refits, or even changing a room to have a completely different purpose such as a home office or nursery.

Home renovation projects can be time consuming and come with their own set of challenges, particularly if you’re living in your home while the project is underway. Looking for ways to make the process as stress-free as possible should be a top priority and this is where using self storage solutions can help.

In this blog we explore how using self storage during your home renovation projects can be a game changer and even lead to a better renovation.

Benefits of Using Self Storage During Renovations

Protect Belongings from Damage, Dust and Debris

Home renovations can bring dust and debris, something you’ll want to protect your belongings from during the process.

They can also come with unexpected bigger complications too. While you may have planned everything to a tee, things can go wrong and existing items in your home can become damaged – which can be costly to replace.

Self storage is a cost effective way of keeping your items safe and is much cheaper than potentially having to replace any items that have been damaged in your home.

Frees Up Space

Trying to navigate around your home during renovation projects can be a bit of a challenge. From ladders to additional wires and machinery, trying to renovate with these extra items alongside the belongings you already have in your home can be stressful. Moving your items and furniture out into storage during the renovation process can save the headache and potential trip hazards and just allow you to move around your home more freely.

Not only this, if you’re adding new items into the home, freeing up the space during the renovation process can allow you to visualise where you want things to go for a better end result.

Flexibility and Ease of Access

Just because your items are locked away in storage doesn’t mean they can’t be accessed. Using convenient, local self storage gives you the flexibility to go and grab whatever you need during the process.

You may have furniture stored that you want to visualise alongside other items in the room. Fortunately, you can simply go and access your storage and items whenever it’s best for you.

Storage for Items Used During Renovations

Many houses are not blessed with storage and space these days however you may find yourself with building supplies and equipment you wouldn’t typically use during the renovation process.

Using self storage gives you the option to not only store your belongings but store all the equipment you’re using to renovate with.

Take Your Time

Renovating while trying to work around furniture and other belongings can be stressful and cause you to rush the job at hand, just so you can get back to living in a stress-free, functional environment. However, trying to rush your renovation could lead to cutting corners, having an impact on the finished result.

Removing unnecessary items and clutter that you don’t need right now, will lead to an altogether more pleasant renovation experience.

Declutter Your Space

Putting items in self storage can allow you to declutter your space in the process. It’s a good chance to really assess whether you want to keep, sell, donate or bin any belongings that are taking up room in your house. Items you want to keep can be safely secured in storage while you can organise other items you’ve been holding on to.

Tips for Planning Your Self Storage Requirements

Hopefully by now you’ll understand the many benefits of using self storage for your next home renovation project. Now, here are some tips for planning and organising your self storage needs.

Choose Appropriate Storage Unit Size

Storage units can range from as small as 16sqft up to 200sqft and above. 100sqft is comparable to a standard garage where you’d be able to store bigger items such as a sofa. If you just need storage for a few items, a smaller unit should be fine but if you’re renovating multiple rooms and have large items to store, you may need a bigger storage unit. There’s no one size fits all and a good storage solutions company will be able to help you work out what you may need.

Find a Local Storage Site

Finding a local storage facility will be more convenient if you need access to your items quickly during the renovation process.

Research your local storage options including transport links and car parking available so you can have a hassle-free storage experience.

Book for the Duration of Your Project

Making sure you have storage for the duration of your project is essential – you don’t want to have to move items to another unit unnecessarily. Work out how long your project will be running for and calculate how long you may need storage for. However, we know that in some instances projects do overrun, so we’d advise adding a buffer as a precaution.

Using storage for longer can often lead to it being more cost effective too.

Packing Your Items

Packing your items logically will help you when it comes to unpacking them later. We recommended packing similar items together and labelling the outside of the box with what’s inside the box!

It goes without saying but take extra precautions with fragile items by packing in secure, sturdy boxes and filling empty spaces with packing paper or another suitable cushioning material such as bubble wrap.

Finally, make an inventory list of everything you have that is going into storage. The last thing you want is unnecessary panic that your valuables have gone missing – when actually they’ve ended up in storage!

Store Wisely

When it comes to loading your storage unit with your items, think strategically. There isn’t much point storing items you may need to come out of storage first, at the back of the container. Storing heavy items at the front may not be advised either if you need to move things out of the way to get to boxes at the back

Before you get to the storage unit, plan the order in which order items should be stored in to minimise stress down the line.
